Hit cap, expertise cap and stat priority: how this changes each spec
What is a real cap?
Cap is the point at which a stat stops solving the main problem it was there to solve.
In practice:
- hit cap prevents hit errors where it matters
- expertise cap reduces punishment on specs and functions that depend on it
- stat priority changes depending on the spec, role and gear phase
The most common mistake is thinking that there is the same rule for everyone.
Cap concepts explained in a practical way
Hit cap
It serves to reduce the chance of your ability not connecting as it should. For many specs, this is essential at the beginning and middle of the progression.
Expertise cap
It is especially important for physical characters who suffer a lot when the execution comes up against the target's defense.
Stat priority
After the correct caps, the spec returns to valuing what really increases:
- damage -sustain
- consistency
- throughput
- survival
How priorities change by class/spec
Casters
They tend to worry first about functional cap and then refine haste, crit, spell power and other secondaries according to the spec.
Melees and hunters
They tend to suffer more when hit/expertise are crooked, so the base matters a lot before refinement.
Tanks
They need to balance survival, threat and stability; Sometimes technical cap matters, but never isolated from the role.
Healers
They don't always chase cap as DPS; the priority tends to revolve more around throughput, mana and comfort of the spec.
Most common itemization errors
- chasing crit/haste too early and leaving cap broken
- copy priority from another spec
- using item level as an excuse for bad stats
- ignore that the priority changes with the gear phase
- thinking that “capped” automatically means “optimized”
How to validate if you are in the right cap
Ask:
- does my spec really suffer from this cap now?
- am I losing damage/consistency due to lack of it?
- have I passed the point and continue investing in this?
- did my stat priority change after the cap?
Stats review checklist
- [ ] do I understand what my spec wants to solve first?
- [ ] Are my main caps coherent?
- [ ] am I prioritizing the right stat for the current phase?
- [ ] did I exchange a good item for a bad level item?
- [ ] Is my build stable or is it still limping due to a crooked base?
Minimum recommendation
To better deal with hit cap, expertise cap and stat priority:
- resolve what is breaking your spec first
- Respect that priority changes by function and phase
- don't treat cap as the final answer to everything
Right cap organizes the base. Real optimization starts after that.
