WotLK stats and caps glossary

What are stats and why do they matter?

Stats are the attributes that define how your character performs:

  • damage
  • cure
  • survival
  • threat generation
  • rotation consistency

In WotLK, understanding stat without understanding cap is half the work.

Simple definition of main stats

Hit

reduces chance of missing attacks or spells

Expertise

reduces target's dodge/parry on melee attacks

Crit

increases critical hit chance

Rod

increases attack or cast speed, depending on the spec

Armor Penetration

gains value mainly in physical specs that convert ArP well

Spell Power

increases damage and/or magical healing

Attack Power

increases physical damage

Weapon Damage

very important for many melee and tanks

Defense

Classic tank defensive stat in Wrath context

Stamina

total life

What are caps and why do they matter

Cap is the point at which investing more in a stat stops being the best use of your resources at that moment.

Common examples

  • hitcap
  • expertise cap
  • soft stem cap on some specs
  • point where ArP starts to compensate

Cap does not mean “never use again”. It means “understand when this loses priority”.

Priority differences by function

Tanks

prioritize defensive base and consistency before offensive luxury

Healers

look at throughput, mana, haste and comfort of the spec

Melee DPS

physical caps weigh a lot in the beginning

Casters

hit, spell power and haste/crit change depending on the tree

Common interpretation errors

1. Thinking that cap is the same for every class

2. Follow stats order as a fixed rule

3. Copy final build on a character from another phase

4. Swap for ilvl and lose cap

5. Investing early in stats that still don't pay off

Quick reference checklist

  1. What is my role?
  2. which caps matter first?
  3. What gear stage am I in?
  4. Is this stat still a priority for me?
  5. Does my next exchange break any caps?

Minimum recommendation

In WotLK, a good stat is a stat in the right context. A good cap is a cap understood, not decorated.

If you know:

  1. what each stat does
  2. which caps matter for your spec
  3. when priority changes

...is already far ahead of most itemization errors.
