Why does gem matter so much in WotLK?
Why well-made socket:
- close cap
- fix itemization hole
- greatly improves the value of gear
- costs less than a lot of part replacement
Most of Wowhead's gems/enchants guides follow exactly this logic: you use gems to align the character with the spec's benchmarks, not to “fill” the item with color.
Main gems by role and spec
Tanks
prioritize:
- stamina
- spec defense/mitigation/context
- hybrid gems when necessary
Healers
prioritize:
- spell power
- stem/intellect according to the tree
- hybrids for bonus/sustain when it makes sense
Melee DPS
prioritize:
- strength/agility
- hit/expertise when needed
- ArP in specs that actually convert well
Caster DPS
prioritize:
- spell power
- hit until cap
- stem/crit as per spec
Sources of obtaining and cost-benefit
Jewelcrafting / AH
main route for most gems
Emblems and vendors per phase
At certain stages, purchasing gems via expansion currency may make more sense
Cut it yourself
If you have JC, your personal value goes up a lot
Market
almost always resolves faster, but the cost varies greatly depending on the phase
Purchase order/farm by phase
Fresh 80
cheap gems that solve caps and bases
Catch-up
move up to better gems in slots that will actually last
Endgame
refine with the ideal gems of the spec and phase
The biggest mistake is filling disposable gear with expensive yolk too soon.
Most common socketing errors
1. Ignore cap for “prettier” gem
2. Follow color and bonuses without looking at the spec
3. Putting an expensive gem on an item that will come out soon
4. Forcing meta gem without fulfilling the right requirement
5. Copy socketing from final phase to initial character
Essential gemstone checklist
- correct and active meta gem
- closed basic caps
- big slots with right gem
- Gear that will last received better gem
- no random socket just because “left over”
Minimum recommendation
To get every important gem in WotLK:
- find out your stat priority
- use gem to close benchmark
- invest more in items that will last
- review meta gem carefully
- Do not plug in automatically
Good gem is not the most expensive. It's the one that makes your build work best.
