Why is item level so misleading?
Because item level measures the item's raw power, not its value for:
- your spec
- your caps
- its function
- your gear phase
- what you already equip in other slots
In WotLK, it is very common for a “larger” piece to yield less than a shorter, but better distributed piece.
Objective criteria for comparing items
1. Does the item match your spec?
Good stat for Holy can be bad for Ret.
Good for tanking, may be useless for DPS.
2. Does it improve your biggest bottleneck?
Weapon, trinket, caps and critical slots weigh much more than a small upgrade on a secondary piece.
3. Do you miss an important bonus?
Set bonuses, caps or combination of stats can make the “upgrade” a bad trade.
4. Is the improvement real in content?
Sometimes the piece looks better on paper, but its consistency falls apart.
Weight of stats by spec/role
Every item needs to be read from the function:
- tanks want survival + stable threat
- healers want throughput + sustain
- DPS want caps, weapon and real efficiency
- PvP requires another weight, especially with resilience
This is why universal comparison almost always fails.
When item level cheats
Classic situation 1
Higher piece, but with wrong stats for its spec.
Classic situation 2
Bigger piece, but it breaks relevant hit/expertise/cap.
Classic situation 3
Bigger piece, but it makes you lose strong tier bonuses.
Classic situation 4
Trinket or “minor” weapon with an effect much more valuable than raw stat.
Classic evaluation errors
- exchange only for item level
- ignore caps
- forget set bonus
- not looking at the build context
- compare isolated item without looking at the entire character
Quick upgrade checklist
Before equipping, ask:
- [ ] does this piece improve my real function?
- [ ] does it break any important caps?
- [ ] does it go head to head with strong set bonuses?
- [ ] does it improve my biggest bottleneck?
- [ ] Is the gain real or just visual?
If the answer isn't clear, the upgrade probably isn't either.
Minimum recommendation
To find out if an item is an upgrade:
- look at the spec, not just the ilvl
- check caps and bonuses
- think about the entire character
- prioritize real impact
A real upgrade is what improves your performance, not what makes your item level number prettier.
