Why does gold matter in the endgame?
In leveling, gold is comfort. In the endgame, gold is a necessity. The list of fixed expenses for an active player at level 80 includes:
- Flask per raid (~20–40g each, 2–4 per raid night)
- Combat Potion (Potion of Speed, Wild Magic, etc.)
- Buff food (Dragonfin Filet, Tender Shoveltusk Steak, etc.)
- Fixes after wiping in raid (5–15g per session)
- Enchantments when exchanging a piece of gear (~30–200g each)
- Gems for new slots (10–100g per gem)
- Dual Spec (1,000g — single cost)
- BoE Items from Auction House to speed up progression
A moderate raid player spends between 100g and 300g per week on consumables and upgrades. Without a method of generating gold, you will find yourself in the negative quickly.
Method 1: Daily Quests
Yield: 100–200g per day | Time: 45–90 minutes
Dailies are the safest and most predictable way to generate gold. Each daily quest rewards between 13g and 20g, and you can do up to 25 per day.
Best dailies hubs for gold:
| Zone | Reputation | Dailies available | Estimated Gold | |---|---|---|---| | Icecrown | Knights of the Ebon Blade | 5–6 | ~90g | | Storm Peaks | Sons of Hodir | 5 | ~80g | | Sholazar Basin | Oracles or Frenzyheart | 4 | ~65g | | Dalaran | Kirin Tor (Cooking/Fishing) | 2 | ~40g |
Tip: do the Sons of Hodir dailies anyway to increase your reputation (shoulder enchantments). Gold becomes a bonus.
Method 2: Herbalism Farming and Mining
Yield: 200–500g per hour | Time: variable
Herbalism and Mining are the most profitable professions for gold farming in WotLK because the materials are in constant demand — alchemists need herbs for flasks, and engineers and forgers need ore.
Most valuable herbs in Northrend:
- Icethorn and Lichbloom — high-end flask ingredients
- Frost Lotus — rare drop of any Northrend herb; high price in AH
- Goldclover and Tiger Lily — high volume in Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra
Most valuable ores:
- Titanium Ore — the most expensive; appears in all zones of Northrend
- Saronite Ore — high volume, sold in stacks at AH constantly
Recommended routes:
- Icecrown — Icethorn and Lichbloom in abundance, few players competing
- Storm Peaks — Titanium and Lichbloom concentrates
- Sholazar Basin — Adder's Tongue and Titanium on compact route
Important: use a route addon like Routes or GatherMate to optimize the path and never miss a spawn.
Method 3: Auction House (flipping and crafting)
Yield: 300–1000g per day | Time: 30–60 minutes
The Auction House is the method with the greatest potential for gold, but it requires patience and knowledge of the server market.
Flipping (buying and reselling)
It consists of purchasing items below market price and relisting them with a margin. Works best with:
- Crafting materials purchased in batches (ore, herb, cloth)
- BoE raid items that someone listed cheaply in a hurry
- Uncut gemstones purchased and resold as cut
Use Auctionator to view price history and identify opportunities.
Crafting for sale
Produce items in high demand and sell on AH:
| Profession | Product | Demand | |---|---|---| | Alchemy | Flasks (Flask of the Frost Wyrm, etc.) | Constant high | | Jewelcrafting | Cut gemstones (Bold Cardinal Ruby, etc.) | Constant high | | Inscription | Glyphs, Darkmoon Cards | High in weekly reset | | Enchanting | Enchantment Scrolls | High when changing gear | | Tailoring | Spellthread (Brilliant Spellthread, etc.) | Moderate |
Flasks and gems are the products with the fastest return — every raid player consumes them every week.
Method 4: Grinding mobs with valuable loot
Yield: 80–200g per hour | Time: variable
It's not the most efficient method at the moment, but it works well at first without developed professions.
Mobs with best loot in WotLK:
- Converted Heroes to Icecrown — drop Frostweave Cloth and valuable items
- Undead in Icecrown Citadel (exterior) — Frostweave Cloth and green items for DE
- Vrykul in Howling Fjord — consistent cloth and green items
- Nerubians in outer Azjol-Nerub — Borean Leather if you have Skinning
Maximize return:
- Have Skinning or Herbalism active while grinding to collect extra resources
- Enchant green items with Disenchant (if you have Enchanting) — the materials sell more than the item
- Sell stacks of Frostweave Cloth at AH instead of the vendor
Method 5: Primordial Saronite
Yield: 150–300g per piece | Time: depends on badges
Primordial Saronite is a BoE crafting material purchased by 23 Emblems of Frost and sold at the Auction House. At the beginning of each phase, it is highly valuable — crafters need it for BiS recipes.
If you have access to Emblems of Frost (via ICC or Daily Heroic), buying Primordial Saronite and selling it on the AH can be more profitable than buying gear — especially if the gear you want isn't already dropping from the vendor.
Method 6: Old Dungeons (Transmog farming)
Yield: unpredictable | Time: variable
In WotLK there is no official transmog system, but private servers that implement the feature create a market for rare-looking items. Classic and TBC dungeons drop visually unique items that may have value.
Check the Azeroth Legacy Discord to see if the server has an active transmog system before investing time in it.
How to structure your gold routine
Daily routine (1–1.5 hours):
- Do the Daily Heroic (+2 Emblems of Triumph/Frost + gold)
- Complete Sons of Hodir dailies (+gold + reputation)
- Sell materials accumulated in AH
Weekly routine:
- Check the AH market and adjust prices
- Produce and sell flasks or gems with your professions
- Do the raids of the week — any BoE that drops and is not an upgrade goes to the AH
Avoid:
- Sell everything to the vendor — materials are worth 3–10x more in AH
- Farming without a collecting profession — you literally leave gold on the ground
- Spend gold on AH gear when the dungeon drops the same item
Summary: best method per profile
| Profile | Recommended method | |---|---| | You have little time | Daily quests (45 min, ~150g guaranteed) | | Has Herbalism/Mining | Farm route in Icecrown or Storm Peaks | | Has a craft profession | Production of flasks, gems or glyphs for AH | | Want to climb without much time | AH flipping (30 min per day, high return) | | Access ICC / Daily Heroic | Primordial Saronite with Emblems of Frost |
The secret isn't to choose one method and ignore the others — it's to combine dailies with the gathering profession on a daily basis and use AH to convert materials into gold efficiently.
