How to get to Hunter's BiS in WotLK: first upgrades and gear route
Arriving at BiS de Hunter requires order, not rush
Hunter has a gear progression that looks simple from the outside — after all, you don't need to worry about melee range or tank positioning. But those who underestimate the route end up scattering emblems, getting upgrades in the wrong order and arriving at the endgame with gear of average value instead of gear that really changes the number.
The difference between a Hunter with phase 2 gear and a well-equipped one of the same phase is huge. The right weapon, trinkets and caps multiply the result. Without them, you can have the full tier and still be leaving DPS on the table.
What defines Hunter gear in WotLK
Priority Attention Stats
1. Hit cap The hit cap for Hunter against raid bosses is 263 hit rating (8% for special attacks with bow/crossbow). Going below this means your most important attacks have a chance of missing. This needs to be resolved before any further optimization.
2. Agility Agility is Hunter's main stat in WotLK. It provides AP, crit and armor. Any item that increases Agility a lot is usually automatically upgraded before analyzing the rest.
3. Attack Power and Critical Strike After the hit cap, priority goes to AP and Crit. Both scale well with raid buffs and Ferocious Inspiration (in the case of BM).
4. Rod Haste starts to be worth more in advanced stages, when you already have hit and crit covered. It's not a priority at first.
The gun changes everything
Hunter depends a lot on the weapon. A good weapon in the wrong phase still delivers more than a bad weapon with a high item level. What matters: DPS of the base weapon, speed and amount of agility/AP in the item.
What to look for first
- Any high-end Heroic weapon when reaching 80 already serves as a starting point
- The real objective is to get to 10 or 25 Naxx weapons as quickly as possible
- Bow or Crossbow? Anyone. The type doesn't matter, the DPS does
Don't ignore Emblem weapons
In intermediate stages, there are purchasable weapons with emblems that cover the gap well while you wait for raid drops. Always check the cost-benefit ratio before spending badges on other pieces.
Trinkets that change DPS the most
Trinket is where a lot of people get their priority wrong. Hunter scales very well with Agility and AP trinkets with active procs.
What to avoid at the beginning
Active use trinkets with long cooldowns usually only have real value in well-organized raids, where you can synchronize with lust/bloodlust and burn phase. For beginners, passive trinkets with good base value tend to be more stable.
What to look for
- Trinkets with high passive Agility
- Trinkets with AP proc in combat (especially if the proc has decent uptime)
- Mirror of Truth (Emblems of Heroism) is a good affordable start
Badge route: where to spend and in what order
Emblem of Heroism (initial phase)
Recommended priority:
- Entrance Trinket (Mirror of Truth or similar)
- Slot pieces where the Naxx 10 drop takes a while to appear (usually shoulders and pants)
- Emblem weapon if you don't already have something better
Don't spend Heroism on a piece that you will soon replace with Valor. Plan so you don't waste it.
Emblem of Valor (initial Naxx/Ulduar)
Recommended priority:
- Tier 7.5 per highest value slot (2 pieces first for set bonus)
- Slot upgrades where the drop does not come out
- Better trinkets if available
Emblem of Conquest and Triumph (Ulduar/ToC)
Here progression accelerates. Priority:
- Tier 8 or 9 for the pieces with the best DPS cost
- Slots that still have low item levels from previous phases
- Emblem weapon if the raid weapon did not appear
Most affordable pre-BiS items to get started
Before consistently jumping into raids, you can put together solid entry gear with:
- Daily Heroics to accumulate emblems and drop level 187 item pieces
- Naxx 10 as entry raid: good drop for Hunter in several slots
- Vault of Archavon whenever Wintergrasp is on your side: possibility of free tier
- Auction House: enchantments and gems do not replace gear, but they help a lot while the pieces arrive
Set bonus: when the tier is worth it
The Hunter tier has bonuses that change the rotation. The 2 piece bonus is usually enough to justify the tier even if the item level is not the highest available in the slot.
Rule of thumb:
- 2 tier pieces with good bonus > 2 non-tier pieces with higher item level
- 4 tier pieces are generally worth it in stable phases, but evaluate the bonus before closing the set
Raid route to maximize gear
Phase 1 (Naxx/Eye/Vault)
- Naxx 10 and 25 for base and tier 7 gear
- Vault weekly (free and with chance to tier)
- Heroics for Emblems of Heroism
Phase 2 (Ulduar)
- Ulduar 10 to accumulate gear and Emblems of Valor
- Ulduar 25 for the most expressive upgrades
- Continue Vault weekly
Phase 3 (ToC / Coliseum)
- Trial of the Champion for entry Emblem
- ToC 10 and 25 for tier 9 and high expression upgrades
- Onyxia can also tier
Phase 4 (ICC)
- ICC 10 and 25 as main focus
- Tier 10 and ICC gear are the final BiS of the expansion
- Citadel Heroics for Emblems of Frost
Common errors in Hunter gear progression
- Spending all emblems without a plan — discovering you should have saved them for another piece
- Ignore hit cap — exciting DPS on the panel that in practice is missing attacks
- Undervalue the weapon — save emblems on smaller parts while the weapon becomes outdated
- Not getting Vault weekly — free tier drop being ignored
- Bad gems and enchantments — good gear with bonuses that don't fit the build
Closed path to Hunter's BiS in WotLK
Fresh 80 → Pre-BiS
- Complete heroic dailies for Emblems of Heroism
- Get into Naxx 10 as soon as possible
- Cover hit cap with gems or hit items if necessary
- Prioritize weapons and trinkets as the first real upgrades
Pre-BiS → Phase BiS
- Consolidate tier 7 or 7.5 with 2-piece bonus active
- Enter Ulduar for Valor upgrades
- Consolidate tier 8 with progression in Ulduar 25
- Refine lower priority slots with emblems
Phase BiS → Final BiS (ICC)
- Enter ICC 10 and 25 with Triumph gear
- Build tier 10 from Emblems of Frost
- Close slots with ICC 25 Heroic drops
- Result: final expansion BiS gear
Minimum recommendation
To get to Hunter's BiS without wasting:
- solve the hit cap before any other optimization
- treat the weapon as top priority in each phase
- spend badges with plan — know what you’re saving for which slot
- Vault every week without fail
- Don't neglect gems and enchantments: they differentiate good gear from optimized gear
