How to get to Priest's BiS in WotLK: progression guide for healer and DPS
Priest has different progression depending on his role
The biggest trap for Priest players is trying to use the same gear path for healing and DPS. Holy and Discipline have common stats, but priorities that diverge in some important slots. Shadow has a completely different path than the two — and ignoring this is the most efficient way to evolve slowly.
Before you start accumulating emblems and planning raids, define your Priest's main role. This determines which stats you prioritize, which tier pieces you get first, and how you organize your emblem spending.
Stats per spec: what each Priest needs
Holy
Holy's healing is sustained, AoE-friendly, and relies heavily on continuous throughput.
Stat priority:
- Spellpower — base of everything
- Spirit — converts to Spellpower via Spiritual Guidance; also regenerates mana
- Haste — reduces the casting time of Flash Heal and Greater Heal; very important for Holy
- Critical Strike — Circle of Healing proc and Guardian Spirit bonus
- MP5 — less relevant than Spirit, but not negligible
Don't neglect Haste. Holy works at cast speed and any cast time reduction improves your actual throughput very directly.
Discipline
Disc is an absorption and prevention healer. The role is different from Holy and the stats also differ a little.
Stat priority:
- Spellpower — fundamental for Power Word: Shield and heals
- Haste — faster cast improves tank reaction and coverage
- Critical Strike — Divine Aegis seeks critical and is central to the Disc kit
- Spirit — good, but less impact than Holy
- MP5 — complementary
Critical is more valuable for Disc than for Holy due to Divine Aegis. Items with good Crit make sense even with slightly lower item levels.
Shadow
Shadow is Priest's DPS. Gear progression is completely separate from the other two.
Stat priority:
- Hit cap — 289 hit rating (17%) against raid boss without group bonus. With Shadow's own Misery or another Draenei in the group, the cap drops. Solve this before anything else.
- Spellpower — core stat for all DoTs and Mind Blast
- Haste — reduces GCD and speeds up your casts; scales very well with Shadow
- Critical Strike — good, but not an initial priority
- Spirit — converts to Spellpower via Twin Disciplines; don't ignore it, but don't force it
Most important parts for each spec
For Holy and Disc
The slots with the highest throughput return at the beginning are:
- Head and shoulders with active set bonuses
- Weapon and orb/staff — base Spellpower of the staff is huge
- Trinkets with high passive Spellpower
For Shadow
The highest returning slots are:
- Weapon — Staff Spellpower amplifies all DoTs
- Trinkets with passive Spellpower or Haste proc
- Hit Pieces in the first slots to close the cap
Emblem route by spec
Emblem of Heroism
Healers (Holy / Disc):
- Passive Spellpower Trinket or Haste
- Parts that take time to drop into the Naxx 10 (shoulders, belt, wrist)
- Emblem weapon if the drop did not appear
Shadow:
- Solve hit cap with gems or purchasable hit items
- Spellpower/Haste Trinket if available
- Emblem weapon if none of Naxx appeared
Emblem of Valor
All:
- Tier 7.5 — start with 2 pieces for the set bonus
- Critical slot upgrade that hasn't dropped yet
- Do not close 4 pieces before confirming the full bonus amount
Emblem of Conquest and Triumph
All:
- Tier 9 — the set bonus is very relevant for all Priest specs
- Slot upgrade where ToC does not drop
- Phase trinkets when available
Emblem of Frost (ICC)
All:
- Tier 10 — top priority
- Slot upgrades where Normal ICC does not drop
- Frost trinkets with confirmed value for your spec
Set bonus: difference per spec
The Priest tier has bonuses that work differently for each role.
Holy
2-piece bonuses usually give direct healing value. 4 pieces is generally worth it, but compare with higher item level offpieces before finalizing.
Discipline
The 2-piece bonus often interacts with Power Word: Shield or Penance. 4 pieces are worth a lot when the bonus is strong — but the bonus for each tier needs to be evaluated.
Shadow
The Shadow tier often interacts with Mind Flay, Vampiric Touch, or Shadow Word: Pain. In WotLK, Shadow grows a lot with a bonus of 4 pieces in certain phases — it's worth checking which phase has the best return.
General rule: 2 tier pieces are almost always valid. 4 pieces need confirmation of phase specific bonus before forcing.
Raid route per phase
Phase 1 (Naxx/Eye/Vault)
- Naxx 10 for base and tier 7 gear
- Naxx 25 for tier 7.5 and more significant upgrades
- Vault weekly for free tier
- Heroics for Emblems of Heroism
Phase 2 (Ulduar)
- Ulduar 10 and 25 for tier 8 and significant upgrades
- Ulduar has a strong stick for healing on several bosses — prioritize
- Continue Vault weekly
Phase 3 (ToC)
- ToC 10 and 25 for tier 9 and high item level gear
- Biggest power jump for Shadow in this phase
- Healer finds important upgrades in the coliseum too
Phase 4 (ICC)
- ICC is where the real BiS happens
- Tier 10 with Emblems of Frost
- ICC 25 Normal and Heroic for final items
- Healer: ICC stick is a great upgrade; Shadow: weapon also defines a lot
Common errors in Priest gear progression
Healer errors
- Ignore Haste — throughput below potential due to slow cast speed
- Spending all emblems without a tier plan — not activating the set bonus due to carelessness
- Use Shadow gear for healing — wrong stats on the wrong role
- Do not strand and gem the weapon — the staff is where the enchantment makes the most difference
Shadow Errors
- Do not cover hit cap — DoTs and Mind Blast making mistakes without you noticing
- Ignore Spirit — secondary stat that Shadow cannot completely throw away
- Exit hit trinkets — once you cover the cap, Spellpower/Haste trinket is worth much more
- Forcing 4 tier pieces when offpieces are much better — losing real stats for bonuses that are not worth it
Closed path to BiS de Priest
Fresh 80 → Pre-BiS
- Heroics for level 187 item emblems and gear
- Cover hit cap (Shadow) or map Spellpower/Haste slots (Healer)
- Resolving weapon/stick as a real priority
- Enter Naxx 10 with enough gear
Pre-BiS → Phase BiS
- Consolidate tier 7 with 2 piece bonus
- Enter Ulduar and ToC as available
- Maintain weekly Vault without exception
- Upgrade weapon in each new stage
Phase BiS → Final BiS (ICC)
- Enter ICC with Triumph gear
- Tier 10 with 2 pieces as early as possible
- Close slots with ICC 25 drops
- Solve high-impact trinkets (Heroic ICC has some of the best in the game)
Minimum recommendation
To avoid wasting Priest progression:
- Define whether you are a healer or shadow before planning any emblem spending
- Shadow: resolve hit cap before any other optimization
- Holy: prioritize Haste — it is the stat that changes real throughput the most
- Disc: Don't ignore Critical Strike — it's central to Divine Aegis
- weapon/staff is a priority in each phase for any Priest spec
