What does Prot need to resolve first?
Before thinking about a serious raid, Prot needs to:
- survive
- hold the fight
- keep threat
- do not turn every pull into a bet
The function improves a lot when the entry into heroics is cleared.
1. Minimum defensive base to start tanking
Prot needs:
- right build
- functional weapon and trinkets
- Coherent defensive stats
- accessible dungeon route
- cooldown awareness
Without this, the problem is not “lack of practice”. It's a lack of foundation.
2. First high-impact upgrades
The biggest jumps typically come from:
- weapon
- trinkets
- pieces that stabilize defense
- slots that help hold heroics and first raids
3. Dungeons and Key Reputations for Prot
The initial focus needs to be on:
- content that provides a predictable basis
- affordable parts
- safe progression
- useful currency
Prot grows better when it doesn't try to run over its own phase.
4. When to advance from heroics to raids
Good signs:
- you control the rhythm
- the healer doesn't always seem on edge
- pulls are already stable
- your defensive base supports the current damage type
5. Preparation errors that cause wipe
- jumping into loud content too early
- pull above the actual base
- delay weapon/trinkets
- ignore cooldowns
- gear by ilvl and not by function
Entry checklist
- [ ] build and glyphs in order
- [ ] functional defensive base
- [ ] coherent weapon and trinkets
- [ ] heroics are now stable
- [ ] do I know where my preparation is still lacking?
Minimum recommendation
Prot starts well when:
- prioritizes stability before speed
- resolve critical slots early
- grows from heroic to real-based raid
Tanks that do well in heroics do better in raids later.
