The 5 most hotly contested mounts at Azeroth Legacy auctions (and how to prepare)
Why some mounts concentrate more dispute
Not every auction item generates bidding war. Exclusive auction mounts have specific characteristics that elevate the competition: limited availability, high visual appeal, absence in any other obtaining route and social status within the server.
The combination of these factors determines the final price and the number of participants. Knowing which mounts have this profile before entering an auction is the difference between real preparation and surprise at bidding time.
Beta: Participation in auctions is available for free to everyone during the beta. After launch, access will be exclusive to VIP players.
The 5 mounts with the most dispute
1. Auction-exclusive draconic mount
Why it's contested: Flying dragons have the most visual appeal in WotLK. Exclusive auction versions — with coloring or model not available in raid or reputation — naturally focus players willing to pay more.
Price increase factor: complete absence of alternative route. If there is no drop, craft or quest that delivers that specific skin, the auction is the only window.
How to prepare:
- Start booking gold in advance, weeks before the event
- Set the maximum ceiling before seeing the current bid — not during
- Monitor Discord to identify when this type of item goes to auction
2. Exclusive cross-faction mounting
Why it's disputed: Mounts that normally only exist for one faction, available to the other via auction, have dual appeal — route rarity and faction exclusivity.
Price Rise Factor: Players from the faction that normally does not have access perceive the item as unrepeatable. The contest includes both collectors and players who genuinely want to use the mount.
How to prepare:
- Evaluate if the mount is a single route or if there is a chance of appearing in a future event
- Take into account that competitors of the opposing faction have extra motivation to win
3. Past event mount reintroduced
Why it's disputed: Event items that no longer exist on the server — or that existed in a previous version — carry nostalgia value and historical scarcity. When they reappear at auction, they concentrate players who have "lost" their original opportunity.
Price uplift factor: the “last chance” narrative inflates the price beyond the actual value of the item. Players enter with emotion, not calculation.
How to prepare:
- Separate the historical value of the item from the actual value for your character
- Set cold ceiling before any “one-time” listings
- If the item reappears once, it will likely reappear again — do not make shortage decision without basis
4. Riding with special speed or mechanics
Why it's contested: mounts with above-standard movement speed, flight mechanics in restricted zones or any functional advantage beyond the visual have demand from players focused on performance, not just collection.
Price increase factor: Stakeholder base is higher — includes players who do not normally compete for aesthetic item.
How to prepare:
- Check if the functional advantage is real or perceived — read the item description before entering
- Consider that the competition will include completely different player profiles than aesthetic auctions
5. Single model lore themed mount
Why it's contested: Some items have specific appeal within the lore and roleplay community-creature models that appear in WoW history but have never been available as a playable mount, or altered versions of iconic creatures.
Price uplift factor: Small niche but willing to pay above average for the specific item. Auction with few participants can have surprisingly high final price because competitors have strong motivation.
How to prepare:
- If you are one of the few who genuinely want the item, calculate high ceiling and enter seriously
- Whether it's coming in for speculation or because it “feels valuable,” re-evaluate — contending against strong motivation with weak motivation rarely ends well
Preparedness strategies by budget
Low budget (less than 2,000g available)
- Focus on auctions of less visible items — they are not prominent mounts but still have value
- Monitor auctions at low turnout times
- Never enter into an item dispute with high expected demand — you will lose gold with no real chance
Average budget (2,000g-10,000g)
- Choose one target item per auction cycle and focus resources on it
- Enter maximum bid at once, not in increments
- Research which items have lower historical competition before setting the target
High budget (over 10,000g)
- You can compete for any item, but you still need to set real ceiling
- Avoid bidding war just because you can — ego-inflated price is still lost money
- Consider when it's worth letting the item go and saving for the next cycle
Mistakes of those who dispute without planning
1. Enter the auction without knowing the item's price history
If the item has appeared before, there is a reference price. Entering without this information means you will find out the value at the worst moment — while the timer runs.
2. Dispute by FOMO instead of by value
"Everyone wants this item" is not a buying criterion. If the item doesn't make sense for your character or playstyle, you'll win the auction and wonder why you spent that.
3. Don't book gold in advance
The GM Auction does not give days' notice in most cases — the announcement comes hours in advance. Those who do not have separate gold do not compete as equals.
4. Enter multiple auctions with no budget for each
Two simultaneous auctions with the same gold available means you can win one and not be able to afford it, or lose both by splitting the budget in half.
Pre-auction checklist by target mount
Research
- [ ] Is the item single route or can it appear by another route?
- [ ] Was there a previous auction for this item? What was the final price?
- [ ] How many players have shown interest in Discord?
Budget
- [ ] Gold separated and reserved before the timer opens?
- [ ] Ceiling set based on the amount for you, not the current bid?
- [ ] Do you have a budget for other priority items for the week after the auction?
Execution
- [ ] Are you going to enter with maximum bid at once?
- [ ] Do you know the timer format of the event?
- [ ] Is it available in the critical timer window to monitor?
