The Titans travel the cosmos
The Titans are not gods in the traditional sense — they are cosmic entities that travel the universe with a specific purpose: to find planets with the potential to become like them.
When a planet has what the Titans call a "Worldsoul" — a developing planetary soul — they order it, shape its life, build facilities to protect it, and continue their journey hoping that the planet will eventually "awaken" and become a new Titan.
It's a cosmic cycle that has happened before. The Titans themselves went through this.
Azeroth is a Worldsoul
Azeroth is no ordinary planet. She has a Worldsoul — a developing consciousness, a titanic being that is still growing within the planet's core.
When the Titans arrived on Azeroth, they realized that the Worldsoul here was extraordinarily powerful—possibly the most potent they had ever encountered. And that's why they invested so much: the guardians, the constructs, the titanic installations spread across the planet.
All of this exists to protect a being that has not yet been born.
Why the Old Gods were imprisoned, not destroyed
Here's the part most don't know: the Titans wanted to kill the Old Gods. But they discovered they couldn't.
The Old Gods have buried themselves so deep within Azeroth that removing them would destroy the planet—and Worldsoul with it. It was literally impossible to save Azeroth and destroy the Old Gods at the same time.
So the Titans did the only thing they could: imprisoned the Old Gods. They placed each of them inside a chamber or fortress, surrounded by guardians, with the mission of keeping them contained forever.
Ulduar is one such prison. Yogg-Saron has been there for millennia, contained—but never destroyed.
What's at stake in WotLK
When players enter Ulduar and face Yogg-Saron, they aren't just clearing a raid. They are visiting the prison of an entity that, if released completely, could corrupt the Worldsoul of Azeroth.
Yogg-Saron doesn't want to destroy Azeroth—he wants to corrupt it. Wants Worldsoul to awaken as an extension of the Void instead of a Titan. That would be a cosmic catastrophe on an impossible scale.
Algalon the Watcher — another Ulduar boss — exists to monitor Azeroth and report to the Titans if the planet is beyond saving. If Algalon sends the "re-origination" signal, the Titans literally reset the planet to start over from scratch. Every living thing would be destroyed.
Why did the name "Worldsoul" only appear later
The concept of Worldsoul has existed in the lore since WotLK — it is the reason for everything that happens in Ulduar. But the explicit name "Worldsoul" only gained traction later, with the book World of Warcraft: Chronicle (2016) and the Legion era, until it became the center of the Worldsoul Saga (The War Within).
Players coming to WoW today already know the term. Players who experienced WotLK at the time felt the weight of the concept without having the words for it.
Knowing this before entering Ulduar completely changes what the lore is saying.
