What equipment to get first: 3-5 high-impact pieces, 1-2 trinkets, 1 priority weapon and tier parts
The most important rule of initial gearing
You don't need 16 perfect pieces to start producing. You need the 5–8 right decisions that most accelerate your spec.
In practice, most builds improve very soon when you get it right: – 3–5 large pieces
- 1–2 good trinkets
- 1 priority weapon
- 1–4 tier parts when the bonus really pays off
This is what unlocks performance without infinite farming.
How to choose pieces with the greatest impact by spec
Not every spec values the same slots in the same way. But there is an almost universal logic.
For melee DPS
Prioritize:
- weapon
- trinket
- chest/legs/head/hands
- slots that fix caps
For DPS caster
Prioritize:
- weapon/off-hand or staff
- trinkets
- large slots with coherent spell power/haste/hit
- parts that close the cap
For tanking
Prioritize:
- weapon
- trinkets
- chest/legs/head/shield or equivalent
- slots that close defense/stamina/defensive base
For healer
Prioritize:
- weapon
- trinkets
- large slots with real throughput and mana
- parts that make the spec comfortable, not just “more stat-filled”
Criteria for prioritizing weapons and trinkets
Weapon
Weapon enters priority early when:
- your spec scales a lot with weapon damage
- current weapon is too weak
- weapon upgrade changes the feel of rotation or threat
In melee DPS and many tanks, this tends to be an almost immediate priority.
Trinkets
Trinket increases in value too much when:
- current slot is too late
- the new trinket changes burst, sustain, throughput or robustness
- it remains strong through many stages
Good Trinket tends to age better than many “average” small slot upgrades.
When to invest in tier shares
Tier is worth a lot when:
- the bonus is strong for your spec
- the pieces are not poorly itemized for their phase
- the rest of the set is already minimally stable
Tier is worth less when:
- the bonus still doesn't change the character much
- the server is at a stage where off-pieces greatly outweigh
- you're still leaving weapon, trinket or big critical slots for later
The better question is not “is tier good?”. Is “tier now worth more than my next off-set upgrade?”
Alternatives if the ideal item does not arrive
This part prevents locking.
If the ideal weapon doesn't drop
Get the best viable weapon in the level and keep evolving.
If the ideal trinket takes time
Use strong reputation, emblems, craft or heroic options.
If the tier doesn't close early
Hold better off-pieces and move forward anyway.
The classic mistake is to stall the entire progression waiting for the “right” piece while the rest of the character remains bad.
Mini shopping/farm list by priority
Safer order for most specs
- priority weapon
- 1 strong trinket
- 2–3 large character-changing slots
- slot that corrects cap
- 2nd trinket or 1st tier piece
- remainder of the tier, if the bonus pays off
- refinement with off-pieces and minor upgrades
This order is not fixed for every class, but it works as a very good skeleton for almost any route.
Common mistakes at this stage
1. Invest in detail before decisive slot
2. Tier too early due to anxiety
3. Ignoring the weapon because “there are too many weak parts”
4. Being without a good trinket for too long
5. Not having the criteria to differentiate a real upgrade from a fake upgrade
Simple piece-wise decision model
Before picking up any item, ask:
- Does this change my character or just my item level?
- Is this slot critical for my spec?
- Is there a better and much more affordable alternative?
- Am I delaying weapon or trinket because of this?
- Does this piece match my current setup?
If the final response is poor, the upgrade can probably wait.
Minimum recommendation
To speed up performance at first:
- focus on 3–5 large pieces
- Get 1–2 trinkets that really matter
- treat weapon as a real priority
- invest in tier only when the bonus makes sense
- Use good alternatives instead of stalling waiting for the perfect part
At the beginning of gearing, the right slot is worth more than the amount of loot.
