Where to start at 80: heroics, reputations, crafts, emblems and pre-raid

The classic mistake of fresh 80

When the character reaches 80, many people try to do everything at the same time:

  • heroic
  • reputation
  • profession
  • badge
  • raid
  • PvP
  • gold farm

The result is almost always the same: a lot of scattered effort and little real progress.

The first phase of 80 needs a simple logic: set up base, unlock content and then accelerate progression.

Initial order of activities with best return

Step 1 — Quick Character Review

Before getting into any serious content, check out:

  1. correct build and glyphs
  2. Organized bar and keybind
  3. basic enchants and gems, if there are already pieces that are worth it
  4. professions/crafts that can advance important slots
  5. spec aligned to the content you will actually do

This step seems small, but it prevents you from farming with the character crooked.

Stage 2 — Reputations and crafts that unlock the base

Reputation and crafted are not “secondary content”. They serve to speed up:

  • head enchant
  • shoulder enchant
  • slots with good crafted parts
  • input items that avoid relying solely on drops

The best use of this phase is to fix big holes in the setup, not to go around making random reputation just because it's available.

Step 3 — Normals, heroics and functional gear

Here the mission is simple:

  • get important weapon or big slot
  • search for useful trinkets
  • close the spec base
  • stop looking like a “raw” character

If the character is still very weak, it's worth using normal dungeons and reputation to adjust before forcing heroics.

Step 4 — Emblems as leverage, not momentum

Badges come in for:

  • fix difficult to drop slot
  • speed up large item
  • close tier when it makes sense
  • unlock sigil, cloak, chest, legs, trinket or strong slot of your spec

The mistake is spending emblems on the first “ok” item and delaying what really changes the character’s strength.

Step 5 — Real pre-raid

Pre-raid is not “any blue piece and go”. This is the moment when you:

  • already has a functional build
  • already closed the stats base
  • already picked up 3–5 relevant upgrades
  • you can now enter an entry raid without being loaded

How to combine heroics, reputations and crafts

The best combination is this:

Reputations

Use for enchantments and guaranteed slots.

Crafts

Use to skip steps or plug critical holes in the setup.

Heroics

Use for trinkets, weapon, large slots and hard to replace items.

Emblems

Use it to buy what most accelerates your current progression.

This model works because each source does something different. The mistake is to treat them all as if they had the same weight.

Priority emblems in the first phase

In the initial phase, the best expenses tend to be:

  1. slot that fixes a real weakness of the spec
  2. item that replaces a very weak and difficult to drop slot
  3. ask for tier when the bonus really pays off early
  4. sigil/relic/idol/totem/libram or specific item with very high return
  5. cape, chest, legs, trinket or large slot, as per spec

The order changes by class, but the logic doesn't change: spend where the upgrade actually changes the character.

Common inbound route errors

1. Going into heroic too early

You don't speed up the game. It just makes everything more chaotic.

2. Ignore reputation and crafted

This leaves you too much of a hostage to luck.

3. Spend emblems on the “pretty” item

A beautiful item is not the same as an impactful item.

4. Trying to close the tier early without the rest of the setup

Sometimes the bonus is worth it. Sometimes the off-set piece would be much better at that moment.

5. Mix role, spec and objective

Fresh 80 needs a clear route. No fantasy of the final BiS on day 1.

fresh 80 operational checklist

Before saying that you have left the “lost” phase, confirm:

  1. build, glyphs and bar organized
  2. Forwarded top reputations
  3. at least 1 craft or useful accessible alternative considered
  4. 3–5 important slots already improved
  5. 1–2 useful or clear route trinkets
  6. weapon or equivalent slot already prioritized
  7. spending badges logically
  8. character ready for real pre-raid

Minimum recommendation

If you want to get out of 80 without crashing:

  1. correct the character before going out farming
  2. use reputation and crafts to secure base
  3. make heroics with a focus on impactful slots
  4. treat emblems as strategic leverage
  5. only think about raiding when pre-raid actually exists

Fresh 80 evolves much faster when the first week is in order.
