The Argent Tournament was created by Tirion Fordring to choose a small elite force that would attack Icecrown Citadel. The Trial of the Crusader is the final stage of that test, and it ends with the Lich King breaking the coliseum floor and dropping the champions into Azjol-Nerub.
This post tells the story. If you want boss tactics, the site already has its own guides: Trial of the Crusader explained and Trial of the Champion: is it worth farming?.
Why did Tirion create the Argent Tournament?
In the war against the Lich King, the Alliance and the Horde had already reached Icecrown, but the distrust between them was still there. Tirion Fordring, leader of the Argent Crusade, had a practical problem. A mass attack on the Citadel would be a massacre. And every dead soldier would get back up as one more soldier of the Scourge.
His solution was the tournament. On the stage of the Argent Tournament Grounds, Tirion makes an announcement every hour. The key lines:
"A massive attack with every able-bodied man would end in needless slaughter."
"Instead, we require a small, concentrated strike force for the attack to succeed."
In other words: instead of a giant army, a small group of the best. According to Tirion, the winners earn their place in the attack on the Citadel. And he closes with a promise: "Arthas WILL fall!"

What is the Argent Tournament Grounds?
The Argent Tournament Grounds sits in northeastern Icecrown, north of Sindragosa's Fall. Everything was built by the goblins Bezzle and Bozzle Blastbolt, between patches 3.1 and 3.2. The main places:
- Argent Pavilion: Justicar Mariel Trueheart and a chapel of the Light.
- Silver Covenant Pavilion (Alliance) and Sunreaver Pavilion (Horde).
- Jousting rings, from the Aspirants' Ring to the Ring of Champions.
- Crusaders' Coliseum (or Argent Coliseum): the arena, west of the Argent Pavilion.
Both sides train together, under the banner of the Argent Crusade. It is a fragile truce, and the coliseum will prove it.
Aspirant, Valiant and Champion: the player's journey
The player is one of the candidates. You start as an Aspirant, move up to Valiant and end as Champion of a city of your faction. The chain goes through "The Argent Tournament", "Up To The Challenge", "The Valiant's Charge", "The Valiant's Challenge" and closes with "A Champion Rises". Anyone who completes it all in the five cities earns the Crusader title. For the seals, see the best Argent Tournament rewards.
Who is the Black Knight?
In the middle of the training, an enemy appears. The Black Knight is a human death knight, an agent of the Lich King, tied to the Cult of the Damned. His mission is to disrupt Tirion's tournament.
The quest chain starts with "The Black Knight of Westfall?" for the Alliance, or "The Black Knight of Silverpine?" for the Horde. After you become a champion, "The Black Knight's Fall" closes the chain and the player defeats the knight.
But he does not stay dead. The quests "The Black Knight's Curse" and "The Black Knight's Fate" reveal that the Cult of the Damned brought him back.
Trial of the Champion: Eadric, Paletress and the Black Knight
Trial of the Champion is the coliseum's five-player dungeon. A herald introduces the group: Arelas Brightstar for the Alliance, Jaeren Sunsworn for the Horde.
The Grand Champions. The first test is a mounted joust against three champions of the rival faction. The Alliance faces names like Mokra the Skullcrusher; the Horde faces names like Marshal Jacob Alerius.
The Argent Champion. The second test is against a champion of the Argent Crusade itself, one of two:
- Eadric the Pure: a human paladin, the grand champion of the Argent Crusade. Tirion put him in charge of coordinating the champions' training.
- Argent Confessor Paletress: a human priestess who preaches and hears confessions at the Argent Pavilion. In the fight, she summons the "memory" of a great enemy from the past.
The return of the Black Knight. When the argent champion falls, the Black Knight flies into the arena and kills the herald. He fights in three forms: first as a death knight in his old armor, then as a skeleton and finally as a ghost. Only then do the champions finish him off.
Trial of the Crusader: what happens in the coliseum?
Trial of the Crusader is the 10- and 25-player raid. The heroic version is called Trial of the Grand Crusader. There are five encounters. In the stands are Tirion, King Varian Wrynn and Garrosh Hellscream.
Tirion opens with a "Welcome, champions!". Varian and Garrosh are already trading jabs. Garrosh says he has seen better challenges in the Ring of Blood and that Tirion is wasting their time.
Northrend Beasts
First come beasts of Northrend: Gormok the Impaler, a magnataur from the caverns of the Storm Peaks. Then the jormungar Acidmaw and Dreadscale. Finally Icehowl, a yeti.
Lord Jaraxxus and Wilfred Fizzlebang
Tirion calls on the gnome Wilfred Fizzlebang, who introduces himself as a master summoner. He was supposed to summon a doomguard, but the ritual goes wrong. Out comes Lord Jaraxxus, an eredar lord of the Burning Legion. He shouts "Trifling gnome! Your arrogance will be your undoing!" and kills Fizzlebang on the spot.
Tirion says the gnome's death is a lesson for anyone who meddles with dark magic. But the political damage is already done.
Faction Champions: Garrosh against Varian
Garrosh accuses the Alliance: "Treacherous Alliance dogs! You summon a demon lord against warriors of the Horde?" Varian replies that the Alliance does not need a demon to deal with the Horde and calls Garrosh a pig.
The next test was supposed to be against the best knights of the Argent Crusade. The two leaders demand to put their own champions in their place. Garrosh shouts "The Horde demands justice!". Tirion gives in: "Very well. I will allow it. Fight with honor!"
Alliance and Horde champions fight each other. In the end, Tirion laments: it is an empty, tragic victory, and everyone comes out weaker. He asks who, besides the Lich King, benefits from this foolishness. This is the moral center of the raid: the tournament was meant to unite, and it became a stage for the rivalry.

Twin Val'kyr
Tirion warns that only together can the champions win the last challenge. Two of the Scourge's strongest lieutenants come from Icecrown: Fjola Lightbane and Eydis Darkbane, the twin val'kyr.
They had attacked the camp with an army of val'kyr. Paletress faced them, stunned both with the Light, and the priests Grimmin and Alorah chained them.
Anub'arak and the fall into Azjol-Nerub
When the twins fall, the Lich King himself appears at the gate. He says the nerubians built an empire beneath the ice of Northrend. And that Tirion built the coliseum on top of it: "MY EMPIRE."
Then he destroys the arena floor. The champions fall into the Icy Depths, a cavern with an underground lake. The wiki describes the place as a small piece of Azjol-Nerub right beneath the Argent Tournament Grounds.
Waiting there is Anub'arak, the former king of Azjol-Nerub. He is the same one who guided Arthas through the underground in The Frozen Throne #5: the ascension of the Lich King. He had already died in the Azjol-Nerub dungeon, in Dragonblight. The Lich King raised him again, stronger and with frost power. He greets the group with "Ahhh, our guests have arrived, just as the master promised."
When Anub'arak dies, for good, he says: "I have failed you, master..." Tirion celebrates: the champions are alive and ready for Icecrown Citadel.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the Argent Tournament exist in the lore?
Because Tirion believed a mass attack on the Citadel would be a massacre, and the dead would become Scourge. The tournament picks a small, strong force for the final attack.
Who summoned Lord Jaraxxus in Trial of the Crusader?
The gnome Wilfred Fizzlebang. He wanted to summon a doomguard, but brought Jaraxxus, who killed him on the spot.
Why do the Alliance and the Horde fight each other in Trial of the Crusader?
Garrosh accused the Alliance of using a demon against the Horde. Varian reacted, and the two asked that their champions fight in place of the Argent Crusade's knights. Tirion agreed and later called the victory empty.
Is the Anub'arak in Trial of the Crusader the same one from the Azjol-Nerub dungeon?
Yes. He dies in the Azjol-Nerub dungeon, and the Lich King raises him again with frost power. In the coliseum he is defeated for good.
