Bolvar Fordragon is the human paladin who ruled Stormwind as regent, led the Alliance in Northrend and, at the end of Wrath of the Lich King, put on the Helm of Domination to become the new Lich King. He is the character who closes the WotLK story: Arthas falls, and Bolvar stays bound to the Frozen Throne to hold the Scourge in check.
This post tells his life in order. The battle of the Wrathgate only comes up briefly, because it already has a full post of its own.
Who is Bolvar Fordragon?
Bolvar is a human paladin of the Alliance. As a boy, he impressed his paladin mentors with his determination and noble spirit. His reputation reached King Thoras Trollbane of Stromgarde.
In classic WoW, he is Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, the figure Alliance players meet in Stormwind Keep. In WotLK, he becomes a field general in Northrend.
What defines Bolvar is loyalty. The Alliance Player's Guide describes him as a soldier as stalwart and loyal as they come, "perhaps to a fault". That loyalty explains every choice he makes, right up to the last one.

Bolvar, regent of Stormwind
Everything changes when King Varian Wrynn vanishes on his way to Theramore. His son Anduin, still a child, is crowned. Bolvar rules in his place as Regent Lord and supreme commander of the kingdom.
Beside him at court stood a noblewoman named Lady Katrana Prestor. She was a royal advisor and often argued against Bolvar's decisions. Meanwhile, Bolvar hunted the Defias Brotherhood, which Jaina Proudmoore linked to Varian's disappearance.
If you want the context for those years, read History of Warcraft #6: the four years, which explains what happened between Warcraft III and WoW.
Bolvar and Onyxia: the controlled regent
Katrana Prestor was Onyxia, Deathwing's daughter, disguised as a human. According to the wiki, she had fastened the Dragon's Eye of the Drakefire Amulet around Bolvar's neck. With it, she controlled the regent's mind and body.
The Eye broke during the fight inside Stormwind Keep, and Bolvar was freed. Onyxia escaped with Anduin as a hostage. Later, the Alliance rebuilt the amulet to enter her lair and kill her. Bolvar locked the amulet away in the keep.
Ahn'Qiraj and Naxxramas: Bolvar and Thrall
Bolvar knew how to cooperate when the world was at risk. In the Ahn'Qiraj War, he agreed to combine armies with Warchief Thrall, forming the Might of Kalimdor.
During the first Scourge invasion, it was Bolvar who recruited Alliance heroes to raid Naxxramas, where they defeated Kel'Thuzad.
Varian's return
When Varian came back, Bolvar escorted him through Stormwind. But the king seemed different: he did whatever Katrana said. At Anduin's urging, Bolvar investigated the king's abduction. The truth was that there were "two Varians", and one of them was the gladiator Lo'Gosh. When the two left to go after Onyxia, they left Bolvar in charge of Stormwind.
Varian thought of Bolvar as a brother. To understand the king and this period, see Varian Wrynn, the lost king.
Bolvar in Northrend: the Valiance Expedition
After the Scourge attacked Stormwind, Varian ordered Bolvar to wipe out the threat in Northrend. His army became the Valiance Expedition.
Bolvar's path across the continent went like this:
- The expedition set up a beachhead in Howling Fjord. See the story of Howling Fjord.
- Bolvar commanded Valiance Keep, in Borean Tundra, before moving north. The context is in Borean Tundra: the zone's story.
- In Dragonblight, he established Wintergarde Keep and took command of Fordragon Hold, at the foot of the Wrathgate.
In Dragonblight, Bolvar coordinated the campaign with Dranosh Saurfang, the Horde commander. The two built a mutual respect that was rare in that war. The orc side of the story is in Saurfang and Dranosh: father, son and the Wrathgate.
What happened to Bolvar at the Wrathgate?
In short: Bolvar and Dranosh attacked the gate of Angrathar together, the Lich King killed Dranosh, and Grand Apothecary Putress released a plague on both armies. Bolvar fell, caught in the gas. Right after that, Alexstrasza's red dragons burned the whole field.
His body vanished. Only his shield came back to Stormwind, into Varian's hands. The full scene, minute by minute, is in Wrathgate: what happened at Angrathar.
Bolvar tortured in Icecrown
Bolvar did not die. The dragons' fire burned away the plague and left his body charred, but it kept him alive. Years later, he summed it up in one sentence: "The dragons' fire sealed my purpose."
The Scourge recovered his body and took it into Icecrown Citadel. There, Arthas tortured him to bend his will. Bolvar did not yield.
The Yogg-Saron vision
There is a hint of this before the final raid. In Ulduar, inside Yogg-Saron's brain, one of the visions shows the Lich King torturing an Immolated Champion, a champion wreathed in flames. That champion is Bolvar. Watching the torture is the Turned Champion, who is Dranosh, already corrupted.
If you want to understand the role of the visions, read Ulduar, the Titan Keepers and the secrets of Yogg-Saron.
How did Bolvar become the Lich King?
At the top of the Citadel, Tirion Fordring's forces find Bolvar chained above the Frozen Throne. After the fight, Frostmourne shatters and Arthas dies.
The spirit of King Terenas Menethil warns that "there must always be a Lich King". Without a master, the Scourge's undead would run loose and ravage the world.
Tirion picks up the Helm of Domination for himself. Bolvar stops him. His reasoning is simple:
- he no longer had a place among the living;
- Tirion still had duties to the world.
Tirion, reluctantly, places the Helm on Bolvar's head. The paladin's voice takes on the Lich King's echo. He asks Tirion to tell everyone that the Lich King is dead and that Bolvar Fordragon died with him. According to the wiki, Bolvar comes to see himself as the "Jailer of the Damned": someone who keeps the dead locked away, not someone who commands them to conquer.
The same ending, from the armies' side, is in Argent Crusade, Ebon Blade and the fall of the Lich King. For the man who almost wore the Helm, see Tirion Fordring and the Ashbringer.
Bolvar after WotLK
Everything from here on happens after 3.3.5a:
- The price of the Helm. Bolvar struggled to control the undead, and the Helm cost him the Holy Light.
- Legion. As Lich King, he made a deal with the Knights of the Ebon Blade: they would fight the Burning Legion, and he would help them find powerful weapons.
- Battle for Azeroth. Sylvanas defeats him in Icecrown and splits the Helm in two. See Sylvanas breaks the Helm of Domination.
- Shadowlands. Bolvar helps the heroes against the Jailer and reconciles with his daughter, Taelia, who had been raised in Kul Tiras. The summary is in WoW History: Shadowlands.
Where to see it in WotLK
In 3.3.5a, you can follow Bolvar from start to finish:
- Fordragon Hold, Dragonblight (39.6, 25.8): Highlord Bolvar Fordragon stands here before the battle. On the Alliance side, the chain starts with "To Fordragon Hold!" and ends with "Return To Angrathar", which plays the Wrathgate cinematic. Dragonblight is a level 71–75 zone.
- After the battle: the quest "Reborn From The Ashes", from Alexstrasza, sends you to pick up Fordragon's Shield on the field (38.0, 19.6) and bring it to King Varian in Stormwind Keep. When he receives the shield, Varian says: "This is my fault." This quest was removed in Cataclysm, but it exists in WotLK.
- Ulduar: the Lich King vision in Yogg-Saron's brain shows Bolvar being tortured.
- Icecrown Citadel (patch 3.3): Bolvar appears chained above the Frozen Throne during the final fight and takes the Helm at the end.
If you are leveling in Northrend, the guide to reaching level 80 faster shows where Dragonblight fits.

Frequently asked questions
Did Bolvar Fordragon die?
No. At the Wrathgate, everyone thought he had died, but the red dragons' fire kept him alive. The Scourge took him to Icecrown, where he resisted Arthas's torture until he became the new Lich King.
Why did Bolvar become the Lich King?
Because there must always be a Lich King to control the Scourge. When Arthas died, Bolvar asked for the Helm of Domination instead of Tirion, since he no longer had a place among the living.
Is Bolvar Fordragon a paladin?
Yes. He is a human paladin of the Alliance. According to the wiki, the Helm of Domination ended up costing him the Holy Light in the years that followed.
What is the connection between Bolvar and Onyxia?
Onyxia disguised herself as Lady Katrana Prestor, an advisor in Stormwind. She controlled Bolvar with the Dragon's Eye of the Drakefire Amulet, until the amulet broke.
Where do I find Bolvar in WotLK?
At Fordragon Hold, in Dragonblight, before the Wrathgate. After that, only at the top of Icecrown Citadel, chained above the Frozen Throne.
