Emblems, tier and weapons that accelerate progression the most
Why does DK accelerate or brake so much due to the use of emblems?
Because in Wrath, much of the progression involves badge economy. Wowhead's emblem guide summarizes the sources and role of each currency: Heroism buys gear/Tier 7 ilvl 200, Valor buys ilvl 213/higher Tier 7, Conquest comes from heroics and Ulduar, and Triumph now comes from daily heroic, Titan Rune daily bag and Trial of the Crusader, in addition to the downward conversion between emblems.
When you spend the right badges in the wrong order, the character even improves — but it improves less than it could.
Optimal badge spending order
Initial phase
Use badges to:
- fix large holes
- get slot that is not dropping
- close tank/DPS base
Intermediate phase
Start thinking about:
- relevant tier
- useful sigil
- large high return slots
- parts that unlock caps or consistency
Late phase
Here the weight of strong tier, sigil and Frost/Triumph pieces grows too much. On already advanced servers, the badge endgame usually revolves more around:
- strong set
- cape/waist/glove/chest/trinket as per spec
- arms if the level allows indirect access via content route
When to close tier bonuses and when to postpone
Closing the tier early is valid when:
- the bonus is really strong for your spec
- tier slots are well itemized
- the server is in a phase where the tier dominates the route
Postponing tier is valid when:
- the available version is still weak for your stage
- there is a better off-piece for your stage
- closing the bonus early makes you lose a much more important weapon/trinket/large slot
Clear examples:
- For Unholy in the Triumph phase, Wowhead recommends running to 4-set as soon as possible, with the sigil soon after.
- For Frost in stage 4, Wowhead says that tier is the obvious winner in most slots and recommends using badges/marks to close the 4-set as quickly as possible.
Weapons with the highest gain per stage
Blood DK
Strong tank weapon changes:
- threat
- fluidity
- comfort of the kit
Frost DK
Weapon is one of the character's biggest upgrades. If Frost continues to have a bad weapon, other improvements lose their impact.
Unholy DK
It also feels a lot about the weapon, but the spec grows especially well when the character's weapon and set evolve together.
Rule of thumb
When the choice is between:
- medium small slot
- or major weapon upgrade
The gun almost always wins.
Priority errors that delay progression
1. Buy legal part before fixing critical slot
2. Closing tier too early without real gain
3. Ignoring strong sigil due to attachment to the visually “bigger” piece
4. Spend on average off-piece and delay weapon/trinket
5. Not adapting the route to the server phase
Purchase checklist and critical upgrades
Before spending badges, review:
- Is my biggest bottleneck a weapon, trinket, sigil or tier?
- Is closing bonus now worth more than picking up a loose slot?
- Is my spec one that needs to run to 4-set?
- Is there a viable alternative to drop before I buy this?
- am I spending to fix today or just chasing the final BiS without context?
Short route by DK profile
Blood tank
- close defensive base
- get high value sigil/defensive slot depending on the phase
- Use badges to plug sturdiness holes
- then refine tier/cape/trinket
Frost DPS
- weapon
- trinket
- big slots
- strong tier when the phase favors 4-set
Unholy DPS
- coherent set
- weapon and trinkets
- rushing to 4-set when the tier really dominates
- sigil soon after, if this is the phase
Minimum recommendation
For DK, the healthiest order is:
- Fix real bottleneck
- prioritize weapon/trinket/sigil according to spec
- close tier when the bonus really pays off
- use badges as leverage, not as an impulsive purchase
- adapt everything to the phase of your server
In Death Knight, rapid progression rarely comes from spending more badges. It comes from spending better badges.
