How to think about gear progression in Unholy?
Unholy is a spec that greatly rewards an organized route. It grows well because:
- works early
- maintains consistency
- enjoy a lot of quality upgrades
- remains strong across multiple content phases
Icy Veins' pre-raid stat priority for Unholy starts at Hit > Strength > Armor Penetration > Crit > Haste > Expertise, which already shows that the spec wants a clean base before end-of-expansion refinement.
Step 1 — Inbound Actual Pre-BiS
Here the objective is not to “wear any size 80 item”. It is to set up the character to:
- heroics
- reputation
- first group content
- incoming raid
What matters most at this stage
- basic caps respected
- decent weapon
- useful trinkets
- great offensive slots with strength and coherent itemization
- build and glyph aligned with what you actually have
The Wowhead and Icy Veins pre-raid guides treat this step as the foundation before the raid, with items coming from dungeons, reputations, professions, world drops and PvP if necessary.
Step 2 — Inbound Raids and Consistency Upgrades
Here your focus changes a little:
- you want to stop correcting the base
- starts targeting slots that greatly increase the consistency of the spec
- the build starts to “turn on” more clearly
Items that most accelerate the spec at this stage
- better weapon
- strong trinket
- tier when the bonus really pays off
- rings/necklace/cape that clear itemization
Unholy grows a lot when the set becomes coherent. Even more so than when you take a super strong isolated item and leave the rest crooked.
Step 3 — Tier and badges as leverage
In Triumph/Tier 9 stages, Wowhead is explicit: for Unholy, tier is the obvious winner in most slots and the recommendation is to run to 4-set as quickly as possible, with the caveat of not spending on 232 too early if you are already on good Ulduar gear/higher off-pieces. The same guide also highlights that the sigil is one of the biggest individual badge upgrades, but still recommends prioritizing closing the 4-set before it.
Practical summary of this phase
- close the 4-set when it actually upgrades
- then refine with sigil and complementary slots
- avoid spending badges on “half-assed” pieces just because they are available
Step 4 — Final BiS
At the end of the progression, the game changes:
- the BiS list matters more
- parts start competing for fine details
- drop luck weighs more
- you need to adapt the route according to what has already fallen
How to adapt the route according to drops and luck
If a big slot doesn't drop, you don't stall the rest of the progression because of it. You:
- picks up viable alternative
- keeps caps
- closes tier when it pays off
- adjusts the list according to your character's reality
The worst way to chase BiS is to play weeks with a worse character because you refused to use a good alternative.
Items that most accelerate spec consistency
Without becoming a giant slot-by-slot list, the upgrades that most affect the feel of Unholy tend to be:
1. Weapon
Always heavy on melee DPS.
2. Trinkets
Phase guides highlight huge examples here: in Phase 3, Wowhead calls Death's Choice a “BiS game” for Unholy, along with Comet's Trail completing the ideal package at that time.
3. Tier with relevant bonus
When the bonus is strong and the server's phase is already favorable, it accelerates a lot.
4. Slots that clear caps and itemization
Sometimes the most valuable upgrade isn't “the biggest”. It's what unlocks the rest.
Priority by content phase
Fresh / pre-raid
Weapon, trinket, caps, big slots.
Inbound raid
Pieces that increase consistency and stabilize the set.
Emblems/strong tier phase
4-set and sigil come in strongly.
Endgame
Slot BiS, drop adaptation and realistic route.
Final summary of the path to BiS
Short and efficient path
- assemble the real pre-BiS
- Stabilize caps and weapon
- prioritize strong trinket
- enter a raid and use emblems with discipline
- close tier when the bonus pays off
- adapt the route to what drops
- pursue BiS without destroying character consistency in between
Minimum recommendation
To take Unholy from pre-BiS to BiS:
- treat gear as a step route
- prioritize weapon, trinkets and coherent set
- use tier with discipline, not out of anxiety
- adapt the route to your luck
- Never sacrifice current consistency for a distant final list
Unholy grows a lot when the progression is well planned, and not just stacked.
