How to think about Shadow's gear progression?
Shadow is a spec that scales well, but needs a logical order to avoid wasting upgrades.
The healthy route is:
- close the technical base
- enter heroics and entry raids consistently
- use tier and emblems when it makes sense
- refine the setup until the final BiS
In WotLK Classic, Shadow's classic priority starts at Hit until cap, then Spell Power, then Haste and only then the rest of the pack.
Optimal progression sequence for Shadow
Stage 1 — Pre-BiS
- hit cap for content
- good weapon
- strong trinkets
- great DPS caster slots
Step 2 — Inbound Raid
- improve set consistency
- keep caps
- increase real throughput
Stage 3 — Tier and endgame
- close tier when the bonus pays off
- exchange parts for real gain, not for item level
- refine rod/spell power of the set
Items with the greatest impact per phase
Fresh / input
- weapon
- trinket
- enough hit
- large spell power slots
Middle of the progression
- pieces that increase spell power and haste cleanly
- tier when the bonus is valid
Endgame
- BiS lists per phase
- fine refinement of the set
- adaptation by drop luck
When exchanging pieces for real gain
A good exchange is one that:
- keeps your hit healthy
- increases spell power clearly
- improves the pace of the spec
- doesn't mess up the rest of the setup
Shadow loses a lot when he exchanges an excellent input piece for a “rare” one that destroys the set.
Errors that delay the evolution of the spec
1. Ignore early hit
2. Look at item level and forget about spell power/haste
3. Close tier early without the rest of the setup
4. Swap strong parts for fake upgrades
5. Play aiming for the final BiS and delay the present
Route summary to final BiS
- close hit
- get weapon and trinkets
- increase spell power stably
- refine rod
- use tier when the bonus pays off
- adapt the route to drops
Shadow arrives at BiS faster when the path is rational, not emotional.
