Val'anyr, Hammer of the Ancient Kings

What is Val'anyr

Val'anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings — the Hammer of the Ancient Kings — is Ulduar's legendary item, available only to healers. But the story behind it starts long before any raid tier.

The weapon was created by the Titans themselves during the era when they shaped Azeroth. It is not an artifact found by adventurers: it is an object of cosmic power that has lain broken within Ulduar for millennia.

The "Ancient Kings" of the name

The name may be confusing. "Old Kings" here aren't the Old Gods — they're the ancient kings of the earthen, the stone beings created by the Titans to help shape Azeroth.

The Titans gave Val'anyr to Urel Stoneheart, the first earthen king. With the hammer, he was to create and give life to the rest of his brethren—a symbol of authority and the power of creation and healing, not destruction.

How it was destroyed

Val'anyr was shattered during the first war between the earthen and the iron dwarves. The hammer represented the exact opposite of what the Old God embodies: order, healing, protection of life.

The fragments were considered lost and remained scattered within Ulduar for millennia.

The reforging: 30 fragments

To create Val'anyr in the game, the player needs to collect 30 fragments — Fragments of Val'anyr — dropped by the bosses of Ulduar 25. Then, the fragments are combined into an item that needs to be thrown into Yogg-Saron's stomach during combat.

This is not random mechanics. It's narrative: you need to take the pieces of the weapon that Yogg-Saron destroyed back to him, let the Old God try to destroy it again — and this time, the hammer survives.

Reforged Val'anyr is stronger than the original precisely because it survived the Old God's attempted destruction that broke it.

Why it's WotLK's most themed legendary

Many Legendaries are powerful but disconnected from the main narrative. Val'anyr is the opposite: every step of the creation process is tied to the lore of Ulduar.

You are literally rebuilding a symbol of titanic protection inside the fortress where an Old God tries to destroy everything the Titans created. The ultimate weapon exists because players went out there, faced the enemy, and refused to let something sacred remain broken.

In the current context

Val'anyr continues to be farmed in Azeroth Legacy. If you have a healer and want the legendary, the process is the same: Ulduar 25, patience with the RNG of the fragments, and the Yogg-Saron fight to finish.

The lore doesn't change the gameplay — but knowing what you're carrying in your hands changes how the achievement feels.
