Sholazar Basin: The Titans' Greenhouse in WotLK

Sholazar Basin: The Titans' Greenhouse in WotLK

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

The story of Sholazar Basin is the story of a garden made by the titans: the Keeper Freya created the jungle as a testing ground, and titan pillars keep the climate warm and the Scourge outside. In WotLK, one of those pillars falls, the undead get in, and the zone becomes the stage for a war between gorlocs, wolvar, hunters and the Avatar of Freya herself.

Why is there a jungle in Northrend?

Anyone who arrives in Sholazar after the Borean Tundra is surprised right away. There are rivers, vines, rhinos and dinosaurs, surrounded by frozen mountains. That is no accident.

According to warcraft.wiki.gg, Freya, the Keeper tied to life, designed Sholazar as a testing ground. She seeded life in other similar places, such as Un'Goro Crater, in Kalimdor.

The climate is artificial. Pillars raised by the titans release pure life magic into the basin. They also protected the region from the Scourge. The wiki describes the place as a "cradle of life".

To understand who the Keepers were, read Keepers and Watchers.

Who's who in Sholazar Basin

| Name | Who they are | Where they are | | --- | --- | --- | | Avatar of Freya | Guardian created by Freya as the basin's "plan B"; also called the Lifewarden | Rainspeaker Rapids (65, 49) | | High-Oracle Soo-say | Leader of the Oracles | Rainspeaker Canopy | | High-Shaman Rakjak | Leader of the Frenzyheart tribe | Frenzyheart Hill | | Zepik the Gorloc Hunter | Frenzyheart wolvar hunter | Summoned with a horn | | Artruis the Heartless | Lich who holds Zepik and Jaloot captive | The Sundered Shard | | Hemet Nesingwary | Famous hunter, leader of the expedition | Nesingwary Base Camp |

The pillars of Sholazar: what are they?

The pillars are the machines that make the greenhouse work. The wiki lists several around the basin: the Glimmering Pillar, the Suntouched Pillar, the Mosslight Pillar, the Skyreach Pillar and the most important one, the Lifeblood Pillar.

The fall of the Lifeblood Pillar

The Lifeblood Pillar stands in the east of the basin. Its heart is a glowing red crystal, the Sundered Shard.

During the war against the Lich King, the Cult of the Damned sabotaged the pillar. When it fell, the snow of Icecrown collapsed into the basin. That is how The Avalanche was born, an open road for the Scourge.

The wiki explains that the Scourge could not normally enter Sholazar. With the pillar down, everything changed. The titan machine at the top became scrap, and the Scourge started mining the red crystal.

The area around it became The Lost Lands, a land "sick and dying". Mosswalker Village stood there. By the time adventurers arrive, the Mosswalker gorlocs have already been killed by the Scourge.

The Avatar of Freya and the Etymidian

The Avatar of Freya is the guardian Freya left behind. She remembers every living being in her care. In WotLK, she stays at Rainspeaker Rapids, watching over the ruined land near the fallen pillar.

She does not trust anyone at first. In the quest "An Issue of Trust", she warns: "If you are not here to destroy the Lich King's servants, leave now." You prove your loyalty by killing undead in the Lost Lands.

The Avatar's chain, step by step

  1. "An Issue of Trust", "Returned Sevenfold" and "The Fallen Pillar": earn her trust.
  2. "Cultist Incursion", "Exterminate the Intruders" and "Weapons of Destruction": hunt the Cult and the Scourge.
  3. "The Lifewarden's Wrath": the Cult attacks the Glimmering Pillar. You blow Freya's Horn at the top, and a floating device fires beams at the cultists.
  4. "Freya's Pact": the Avatar reveals a last resort, a defense the titans left to protect their testing sites.
  5. "Powering the Waygate": you flip the switches at the Makers' Perch and the Makers' Overlook.
  6. "The Etymidian" and "Back Through the Waygate": a trip to Un'Goro and back with the rune.
  7. "Reclamation": the final attack.

The Waygate links Sholazar to the Shaper's Terrace, in Un'Goro. According to the wiki, it had been idle for seven centuries. It is concrete proof that the two "greenhouses" were part of the same project.

On the other side waits the Etymidian, a stone colossus. It sensed that Sholazar was "unraveling" under the plague of death.

In "Reclamation", the Avatar herself hesitates: "The Etymidian is one of the most destructive forces ever created by the titans, and I am reluctant to unleash it upon my lands." But there is no choice. You use the Omega Rune at the Avalanche and control the colossus. It crushes 200 Scourge servants and three bosses: Bythius the Flesh-Shaper, Urgreth of the Thousand Tombs and Hailscorn.

Oracles vs Frenzyheart: the local war

While the Scourge invades from the east, two native peoples fight each other.

The Oracles are gorloc tribes, the arctic cousins of murlocs. They see themselves as guardians of titan technology, even though they understand little of it. They power their shrines with crystals. With the wrong crystals, the shrines go haywire and create chaotic weather.

The Frenzyheart are a wolvar tribe, the short wolf-men of Northrend. Their leader is High-Shaman Rakjak. Elder Harkek gives out the tribe's dailies.

How you get into this fight

It starts by accident. In the quest "The Part-time Hunter", Tamara Wobblesprocket asks you to kill a beast called Pitch. But the wolvar Tracker Gekgek was hunting the same animal.

In "Playing Along", he is furious: "My prey! You took my prey!" Now you "owe" him and become a Frenzyheart slave.

You help Zepik in quests such as "A Rough Ride" and "The Mist Isn't Listening". In one of them, you break crystals near the Mistwhisper shrine and cause a destructive storm. Later, the same chain goes through the Oracles' side.

Artruis and choosing a side

The last quest is "A Hero's Burden". The target is Artruis the Heartless, a level 77 elite lich, in the Sundered Shard cave. Held captive beside him are Zepik (wolvar) and Jaloot (gorloc).

In the middle of the fight, Artruis freezes himself and releases the two, who attack you. Whoever you kill decides your side:

  • Kill Jaloot and leave Zepik alive: Frenzyheart.
  • Kill Zepik and leave Jaloot alive: Oracles.

The survivor helps you finish Artruis. The rival faction drops to Hated, but you can switch sides later.

The Oracles' most famous reward is the Mysterious Egg. It hatches one of four pets or, with luck, a Green Proto-Drake. To decide which side is worth more, read Oracles or Frenzyheart: which to choose and why.

Hemet Nesingwary's expedition

In the west, a very different group reaches the jungle. Hemet Nesingwary, the hunter of Stranglethorn and Nagrand, set up camp in Sholazar.

His arrival was an accident. He sailed up the river from the sea, thinking the Seabreach Flow would be a good way inland. He found out too late that he was wrong. The ship ran aground, and the spot became Nesingwary Base Camp. Fun fact: his name is an anagram of Ernest Hemingway.

The Sholazar safari

Each hunter in the expedition has a chain:

  • Debaar: crocolisks ("Crocolisk Mastery").
  • Buck Cantwell: dreadsabers ("Dreadsaber Mastery").
  • Hemet: rhinos ("Rhino Mastery") and "The Bones of Nozronn".
  • Dorian: from "In Search of Bigger Game" to "Post-partum Aggression".

The final trophy is Broodmother Slivina, an elite proto-dragon in the Savage Thicket. Hemet has you steal her eggs to lure her out and then faces her with his mammoth and a hero's help. Completing everything gives the achievement "The Snows of Northrend".

Engineers in the jungle

The gnome Weslex Quickwrench lost his flying machine in a crash. With "Have a Part, Give a Part" and "Need an Engine, Take an Engine", you collect the parts. The repaired ship becomes the Spirit of Gnomeregan, the camp's air transport.

Engineer Helice (35.6, 47.3) was exploring the Suntouched Pillar when the Venture Company caught her. In "Engineering a Disaster", you escort her back to camp.

And the real Freya, where is she?

Freya does not appear in Sholazar. According to the wiki, Yogg-Saron took control of her and left her dormant inside Ulduar.

In the Ulduar raid, you face her in the Conservatory of Life. Once defeated, she breaks free of the corruption and helps against Yogg-Saron. See Ulduar, the Titan Keepers and the secrets of Yogg-Saron.

Where to see it in WotLK

  • Level range: 76–78, after Zul'Drak and before the Storm Peaks. To speed things up, see how to reach level 80 in less time.
  • How to get there: from the north of the Borean Tundra. The Spirit of Gnomeregan links Nesingwary Base Camp, River's Heart and Fizzcrank Airstrip (Alliance) or Bor'gorok Outpost (Horde).
  • Nesingwary Base Camp (west): Hemet, Weslex and the safari. Start with "Welcome to Sholazar Basin".
  • Rainspeaker Rapids (65, 49): the Avatar of Freya and the chain up to "Reclamation".
  • The Avalanche and The Lost Lands (east): the fallen pillar and Artruis's cave.
  • Frenzyheart Hill and Rainspeaker Canopy: the bases of the two factions.
  • Ulduar, in the Storm Peaks: the fight against Freya. See the Ulduar raid guide.
