Beyond the Dark Portal #10: the artifacts

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

"Beyond the Dark Portal" series — Beyond the Dark Portal #10. The story of Beyond the Dark Portal, from the internment camps to the end of Draenor. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.

Ner'zhul held four of the most powerful objects in Warcraft. Each one had a story and a role in his plan. This episode pauses the action to explain what the Skull of Gul'dan, the Book of Medivh, the Eye of Dalaran and the Jeweled Scepter of Sargeras are, and what they would do together.

The Skull of Gul'dan

The skull of the warlock who corrupted the Horde. Charged with fel magic, it was used to reopen the Dark Portal. After this story, it returns in Warcraft 3, when Illidan absorbs it and takes on a demon form.

The Book of Medivh

The book with the spells of the last Guardian of Tirisfal, including the ones that opened the Dark Portal. In Warcraft 3, Kel'Thuzad uses the same book to summon Archimonde in Dalaran.

The Eye of Dalaran

A Kirin Tor artifact that focused magical energy. For Ner'zhul, it was the power source needed to keep the portals open.

The Jeweled Scepter of Sargeras

The Jeweled Scepter of Sargeras is an artifact kept in the Tomb of Sargeras, tied to the power of the fallen titan. Together with the others, it would help tear the fabric between worlds.

The Spell of Conjuration

Together, the artifacts would let Ner'zhul cast the Spell of Conjuration and open portals from Draenor to other worlds. But the spell had a price Ner'zhul did not foresee: the energy it released could destroy the planet itself.

What this changes in the story

The artifacts of Beyond the Dark Portal show up again and again in the lore, which shows how connected the story of Warcraft is. Almost every great villain of the wars that follow uses at least one of them.

The Skull of Gul'dan transforms Illidan. The Book of Medivh brings Archimonde. The Scepter of Sargeras comes back as part of the story of the Tomb of Sargeras. And the portal magic Ner'zhul tried to use is the same that later creates the portals of Outland for the Legion.

Understanding these four objects is a quick way to understand why Warcraft talks so much about artifacts and about who carries them.
