"Beyond the Dark Portal" series — Beyond the Dark Portal #16. The story of Beyond the Dark Portal, from the internment camps to the end of Draenor. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.
Hellfire Citadel was the heart of the Horde in Draenor, and the Alliance took it. The fortress was defended by Kargath Bladefist, the Shattered Hand clan and the ogre Dentarg. Khadgar killed Dentarg, but Kargath escaped, and Ner'zhul was not there. Before dying, though, Dentarg revealed what the Chieftain was planning.
The attack
The Alliance threw everything it had at the Citadel. The defenders were the warriors of the Shattered Hand, led by Kargath Bladefist, and the ogre Dentarg, who served Ner'zhul.
Khadgar and Dentarg
Khadgar faced Dentarg and killed him. Before dying, the ogre revealed that Ner'zhul planned to create new portals. Khadgar's suspicion was confirmed.
An incomplete victory
The Citadel fell, but the main target was not there. Ner'zhul had left earlier, and Kargath managed to escape. The Alliance held the Horde's stronghold, but not the man who commanded everything.
Kargath survives and shows up years later as the boss of the Shattered Halls, inside the same citadel, in TBC.
What this changes in the story
Hellfire Citadel is one of the most important places in Outland. It was there that the orc chieftains drank the blood of Mannoroth, at the very beginning, and it was there that the Alliance defeated Ner'zhul's Horde.
In TBC, the Citadel has three dungeons, Hellfire Ramparts, Blood Furnace and Shattered Halls, and one raid, Magtheridon's Lair. In Warlords of Draenor, the alternate version of the Citadel becomes the expansion's final raid, with Archimonde.
The victory at the Citadel also showed the Alliance that the real danger was not the Horde itself, but the spell Ner'zhul was preparing.
