Beyond the Dark Portal #8: the Horde's mission

•Lore•Brendo Arruda

"Beyond the Dark Portal" series — Beyond the Dark Portal #8. The story of Beyond the Dark Portal, from the internment camps to the end of Draenor. The episodes are listed in order at the end of the post.

The Horde's mission on Azeroth was clear: get the artifacts Ner'zhul needed. Teron Gorefiend's orcs, with the help of Deathwing's dragons, attacked the new Stormwind for the Book of Medivh, followed a lead to Alterac and went into the Tomb of Sargeras for the Jeweled Scepter of Sargeras.

The Book of Medivh

The Book of Medivh was kept in Stormwind, which was being rebuilt. In the novel, Gorefiend's orcs searched for the book in the Royal Library, but it was already gone. A guard lay dead, killed with an Alterac blade. In Alterac, King Aiden Perenolde, held prisoner in his own palace, handed over the book in exchange for the Horde destroying the Alliance troops occupying the city.

In the game campaign, the orcs attack a castle built on top of the old Stormwind keep, do not find the book and follow a lead to Alterac, where a mage was keeping it. With Deathwing's help, they get the book.

The war at sea

To move around Azeroth, the Horde needed the sea. In the game campaign, the orcs attack the Kul Tiras fleet to control the Great Sea.

The Scepter of Sargeras

The Jeweled Scepter of Sargeras was in the Tomb of Sargeras, the same place where Gul'dan had died. A small group of orcs went into the tomb, guarded by the undead of the Stormreaver and the Twilight's Hammer, and came out with the scepter.

What this changes in the story

The hunt for the artifacts shows the new Horde acting as a strike force, not as an army. Each mission had a target, and the orcs vanished once they got what they wanted.

The places they visited are familiar to anyone who plays WoW. Stormwind was being rebuilt after the First War. Alterac had fallen apart after Perenolde's betrayal. The Tomb of Sargeras, on the Broken Isles, returns in Legion as the center of the Legion's invasion.

The Book of Medivh also has a long story after this one: in Warcraft 3, it is with this book that Kel'Thuzad summons Archimonde in Dalaran.
